Durante questa quarantena, Guillermo del Toro è stato stranamente inattivo sui social. Le cose però sono cambiate nel giro di pochissimo tempo. Il regista ha dato vita infatti ad un gigantesco thread su Twitter riguardante i tanti libri che sta leggendo e film che sta vedendo durante questa pausa forzata dai lavori del suo prossimo film, Nightmare Alley. Il premio oscar per Il Labirinto del Fauno e La Forma dell’Acqua ha poi invitato a condividere con lui e con tutti i fan le loro attività di lettura e visione di film di questo periodo di auto-isolamento. Il risultato è stato incredibile. Si sono uniti a Guillermo del Toro personaggi come Darren Aronofsky, Ari Aster, Ava DuVernay, Sarah Polley, Edgar Wright, Rian Johnson, Brad Bird, Scott Derrickson, James Mangold e tanti altri.
Da parte di del Toro sono arrivati consigli come Volto di Donna di Gustaf Molander, Il Posto di Ermanno Olmi, Girlhood e Tomboy di Céline Sciamma. Il regista ha anche detto di star facendo vedere ai suoi figli i film “a prova di proiettile” come Cantando sotto la pioggia e La finestra sul cortile. Non solo film, sono arrivati consigli anche sulle serie tv, sulla base di ciò che sta guardando il regista: Ozark, Better Call Saul e Chopped.
Il regista di Doctor Strange, Scott Derrickson ha risposto a del Toro, dicendo di essere ossessionato da Devs di Alex Garland: “Un thriller avvincente costruito su teorie scientifico-filosofiche sui mondi paralleli. L’impatto visivo è meraviglioso. Una serie incredibile”.
Ava DuVernay ha invece confessato di aver scoperto strani gusti duranti questa quarantena. Ha detto di aver visto in un solo giorno, di seguito Notting Hill e Il cavallo di Torino di Béla Tarr. Ari Aster ha fatto una maratona della terza stagione de I Soprano. Rian Johnson ha parlato invece di 3 Women, di Robert Altman.
Darren Aronofsky ha invece elencato i film visti in questi primi quaranta giorni di quarantena: Barton Fink – È successo a Hollywood, Il favoloso mondo di Amelie, Rashomon e Total Recall – Atto di forza. Il regista ha anche detto di aver letto grandi classici di Henry David Thoreau e Pablo Neruda.

The TV show that I cannot recommend more strongly is Alex Garland’s DEVS on Hulu. It is a compelling thriller built upon some very advanced science/philosophy many-worlds theories — and the the visuals are gorgeous. Just an amazing show.
