Il dramma in costume di David Fincher, Mank, fa luce sul dramma personale e professionale dell’età dell’oro di Hollywood, ma come molte donne hanno sottolineato dopo il suo debutto su Netflix durante il fine settimana, ha anche inavvertitamente fatto luce sui problemi sessisti duraturi di Hollywood sulle decisioni di casting e di età.
Il film, che copre la battaglia tra lo sceneggiatore di Quarto Potere Herman J. Mankiewicz e il regista Orson Welles sui crediti di scrittura del film, vede il 62enne Gary Oldman nei panni di Mankiewicz, che in realtà aveva solo 43 anni. In parte perché Mankiewicz era, notoriamente, un alcolizzato il cui bere pericolosamente eccessivo lo faceva sembrare decenni più vecchio di lui, e alla fine lo uccise all’età di 55 anni.
Ma come notato dalla scrittrice Emily Nunn, la moglie di Mank, che nella vita reale aveva esattamente la stessa età, è interpretata dalla 33enne Tuppence Middleton. I due erano sposati dal 1920 (il che significa che se avesse davvero avuto 33 anni nel 1940, quando il film è in gran parte ambientato, ne avrebbe avuti 13 quando si è sposata.).

Nunn prosegue notando che “non sembra esserci una sola donna sopra i 40 anni nel cast”, il che una rapida occhiata lo conferma. E a proposito di discrepanze di età, non è solo il casting di Sara Mankiewicz, il film ha anche abbassato l’età dell’altro ruolo femminile di spicco, Marion Davies, la star di Hollywood dell’era muta la cui relazione di lunga data con l’editore William Randolph Hearst ha ispirato una grande parte della trama di “Citizen Kane”. Davies aveva esattamente la stessa età dei Mankiewicz, ma ecco che è interpretata dalla 35enne Amanda Seyfried mentre Hearst è interpretato dal 74enne Charles Dance.
E come hanno sottolineato molte persone ispirate dall’osservazione di Nunn, questo tipo di grande differenza di età tra attori e attrici è fin troppo comune a Hollywood.
I guess in the next Hollywood movie about politics, Janet Yellen will be played by Margot Robbie or Jennifer Lawrence.

It is so blatant. Lots of unattractive out of shape men (white) sharing the screen with young, outwardly perfect, 1 dimensional women. The television and movie industry perpetuates and thrives on sexism, despite wanting to give the appearance of having evolved on the issue.

Outrageous!! Robin Wright, Jodi Foster (worked w/ Fincher in Panic Room), Helen Hunt Julianne Moore, Laura Linney. Nicole Kidman is a great character actor, cares most about director & Fincher fits. Multitude of female actors who would be great. This movie needs a boycott.

L’accusa, dunque, verte sul problema dell’attribuire ruoli ad attori più vecchi del personaggio che vanno ad interpretare mentre per quel che riguarda le donne si punta sempre alla scelta, forse sulla base del loro aspetto fisico, di attrici più giovani, a prescindere dall’età del personaggio di cui dovranno vestire i panni.
